CINEPHILE Multiplex

Interior Design
Location : PNR Felicity mall, HSR Layout, Bangalore
Area : 11,000 sq.ft
Year : Completed in 2023

Cinephile – a four screen multiplex was the brainchild of our client, an avid movie bug who wanted a movie house that was vivid and distinct from the rest out there. The trendy multiplexes of today have gotten typical with minimal variation of materials & flushed with glossy decors.

We approached this design with a more rugged outlook that focuses on the feel of a ‘Behind the scenes’ space that express the guts of movie making in its bareness. This start point of an idea dissipates into the surfaces of the main lobby that is articulated with rugged natural textures of mud plastered walls, oxidized cement seaters, steel mesh clad columns and metal slats for a false ceiling. Exposed service lines, bare ceiling and soffit of the raked seats of the cinema halls, add to this look. All these elements and their textures come together to form a space that’s more physically interactive and not just visually. The stepped informal seats, the wood wrap around ledge encircling the columns and refurbished old wood movie benches offer a varied experience of a lobby. The warm tones starting at the entry of the space flow into one another through flooring patterns culminating at the screen doors. Old cinema reels were refurbished into copper coated light fixtures making the strips of the false ceiling look like a reel flowing out of these reels.

Overall, the lobby is looked at as a space beyond a waiting lounge but a more visually and physically engaging space that leads to the movies.
